Because of its smaller size, and soft padded construction, Franklin's Soft Foam Air Tech football is a fun toy for kids, and adults as well. At about 5 inches maximum diameter, the Air Tech is smaller than a pee wee ball, and more manageable for children with smaller hands. The listed age range is about right. This is not a 'regulation' football, and is best suited for casual play.
Like a regular ball, it is inflated with air. The outer skin being made of a spongy material, makes it lighter, and less likely to cause injuries. The skin is made up of two different kinds of panels, of different colors, and textures. The gray colored panel has a standard pebble finish. The color of the other panel varies, but the finish is designed to provide a firm, non-sliding contact surface. Whether you are right or left handed, one of these panels is located where the thumb is placed. If your hand is large enough, the this panel really helps to give you a fantastic grip. The spongy material is fairly durable, but naturally can be damaged if it scrapes against something abrasive or rough.
Although shaped like a football, the Air Tech does not quite behave like a normal football. Since the ball is lighter, if you try to gun it, and don't keep the nose down, the ball will have a tendency to sail. It is really easy to put air underneath the ball, and float farther than you might expect. It is just something that you need to adjust to. Also since it is not uniformly balanced, it may be a little more tricky to throw a perfect spiral. Putting the physics aside, what is most important to kids is having fun. This smaller ball, allows kids with hands too small to grip a pee wee football, to at least get some experience throwing, learning how to impart a spiral, and work on basic footwork. Since it is lighter, kids can throw it farther than a leather ball, which usually encouraging, and helps give them confidence.
On the receiving end, this ball sticks to your hands, and is very easy to catch. It is smaller, so you have to keep your eye on it, and because it is light, when the ball gets deflected, it can pop up quite unpredictably. If your hands are large enough, the grip is so good that one handed catches are possible, and throws often tend to be high, so you may get the chance to attempt it. The color is unusual, which may affect its 'catchability', for those used to seeing a brown ball.
Outdoor play is recommended. Although the ball is soft, it is not all sponge, like a Nerf football, and it has the mass to do plenty of damage indoors. While great for kids, anyone who enjoys tossing a football can have fun with this ball. When it comes to cost, you can probably get a better price at your local toy store, and you can see the different color variations that are available, (silver and black, silver and blue, and silver and salmon), and pick the one you want.
