Some assembly is required, but it's simple enough, and assembly directions come with the package.
It looks a little smaller than I was expecting, and when I had it assembled I was a little afraid it would be uncomfortable to use due to the small size, but it actually seems to work really well, much better than the plastic construction would imply. It's comfortable to use and rolls much better than expected over uneven surfaces. (which you wouldn't think from the tiny wheel)
It also comes with a can of chalk, which they say is good for about 200 feet of spray.
I was also pleasantly surprised with how well the spray chalk adheres. I was originally going to buy a dry-limer, but bought this instead due to price concerns. On seeing how the spray chalk works, I'm actually much happier that I bought the chalk line express.
The only con is that it DOES NOT WORK WITH OTHER SPRAY CHALKS!!!
When I purchased it, there "often bought with" or what have you, pointed to Krylon and Rustolem spray chalks. I bought some of each, to see how they would work. The Chalk Line Express refills are smaller in diameter, and the regular spray cans don't even fit. DO NOT BUY GENERIC SPRAY CHALK FOR THIS DEVICE as it will not work, and because it's hazmat, you won't be able to return it either. I was very happy that, on explaining this to Amazon, they refunded me the cost of the spray chalks I bought, and I'll be able to go buy the appropriate refils.
A note on refil cost: On google, I was able to find refils for $6.49 each, far less than the Krylon and Rustolem bottles I was looking at on amazon, so I find the pricing to be fair for sure. It's just a shame that amazon does not carry the refills, as I'd rather pay more and work with a reseller I trust than generic places off of google.
